Lt. Col Roy
(Neil) McCann, NAV, DOB June 20, 1937, DOD July 12,
1999, Interned Mt. Joy Cemetery,
Lucasville, OH
He was stationed RTAFB Ubon Oct 1970 to Oct 1971.
I'm glad this site exists, as it gives me a way to
learn more than what I learned from dad. He never
did talk much about his time over there. He flew on
Ghost Rider with AC Major (at the time) Bill Wirth
and they were called "F" Troop, but do not know the
crew number was. The other officers in the crew
were George Sowell, Wayne Menne(sp?), Syd Marcus,
Jerry Porter, Rick Collins, Russ Winn and Ben
Cason. I don't have the names of the enlisted guys,
sorry. Most of the pictures are at mom's and I have
limited additional information at my place, but will
dig up what pictures I can soon. I know there are
several crew photos and a couple in color. Bill
Wirth had a pig farm and there is a crew shot of him
with his back to the camera wearing an "Opal Valley
Swine Farm" overcoat. I hope it is still there. I
remember this photo as we were at Elmendorf AFB
after his tour was up and a few years later, Bill
was stationed there also and I saw it when I was
about 12 or 13, so I remember it well.
I do know that he was with the AC-119s Stingers for
a time trying to get their systems calibrated to up
their efficiency to that of Spectre, but time and
dates are unfortunately gone as mom doesn't know.
I do recall him saying he either built or had help
building the bar in the Hootch and I know he took a
picture of it and there is a Thai lady behind it.
I wish I had gotten more information before he
passed away, but he was diagnosed with intestinal
cancer and was gone in two days. -Tony McCann

LTC
Hughes
was a retired lieutenant colonel
who flew into hot spots in
Africa, Asia and Europe as an
Air Force navigator for 21
years. He landed C-130s under
fire in the Congo, oversaw radar
used to protect U.S. planes
flying through hostile airspace
into Berlin during the Cold War,
and waited for possible combat
orders in the Cuban missile
crisis.
"They were very tense times, but
it was all part of the job he
and the others were trained to
do," his wife said. "They all
had nerves of steel."
Mr. Hughes
also flew C-130 gunships on more
than 100 combat missions in
Vietnam and commanded more than
30 aircraft and 450 personnel at
an air base in Thailand. In a
daring 1972 raid amid extensive
anti-aircraft fire, he succeeded
in damaging eight supply
vehicles and igniting fires and
explosions that destroyed enemy
ammunition and supplies.
He was
awarded the Distinguished Flying
Cross for his actions in the
attack. He also received three
Air Medals, the Meritorious
Service Medal, two Air Force
Commendation Medals and other
honors before retiring at
McClellan Air Force Base in
1974.
He spent
eight years as a commercial real
estate broker and developer with
Ose and Associates. He was
involved in many building
projects on Howe and University
avenues. He also worked briefly
for Federal Express and opened
his own real estate business.
Edward
John Hughes was born in 1933 in
Indianapolis, where his father
was the city's public works
director and his mother was a
nurse. He attended Butler
University and earned a
bachelor's degree in political
science at University of
Nebraska.
He married
Charlotte Mandronico in 1958 and
had three children while serving
in the military. He was
stationed at bases throughout
the United States and in Germany
and Thailand and flew across the
Himalayas in India.
An active
man, Mr. Hughes played on the
Air Force baseball team, worked
out regularly and played golf
four days a week. He was an avid
NASCAR fan who attended the Indy
500 race as a boy. Friendly and
outgoing, he enjoyed spending
time with family and friends,
meeting new clients and sharing
tales of his Air Force
adventures.
"He was a

Hughes said. "He didn't brag.
But he was very proud of his
service."

learned of the passing of Michael "Mike" McGrail,
Chief of 16th Life Support 78-83. Mike left us on
Jan 2, 08 after a long battle of cancer. Mike was
an awesome Spectre, Friend and outstanding Life Support

His Life Support Team loved him and us crewdogs always
appreciated his professionalism and attention to detail.
After retirement Mike grew a beard and reminded a lot of
us of "Chuck Norris". Mike got a chuckle when we
called him that. Mike, have a beer with all the
rest of the Spectres gone and we will join you one day
at the final reunion!
